Motorcycle safety awareness as roads thaw

As winter gives way to spring, roads begin to thaw, and the warmer weather invites more motorcyclists to hit the road. This increase in traffic also raises the risk of accidents.

As a rider, you can do your part to ensure road safety by following a few key reminders that help you avoid accidents.

Stay visible on the road

One of the most important safety tips is to stay visible. Motorcycles are much smaller than cars, making them harder to see, especially in a driver’s blind spots.

To improve visibility, wear bright or reflective clothing. Using headlights, even during the day, can make your bike more noticeable to other motorists.

Also, choose a safe position on the road. Avoid riding in blind spots of cars and trucks, and signal clearly before changing lanes or making turns.

Wear proper gear

Wearing the right gear is vital for protecting yourself in case of an accident. A helmet is your most important piece of safety gear. Make sure it fits well and meets safety standards.

Besides a helmet, wearing protective clothing, such as a jacket, gloves, pants and boots, can greatly reduce the risk of severe injuries. These items not only offer protection during a fall but also from the elements and road debris while riding.

Know what to do after an accident

Even with precautions, accidents can happen. If you find yourself in a motorcycle accident, start by checking for injuries. If you or anyone else has sustained injuries, call emergency services immediately.

While you should move to a safe location if possible, do not leave the scene of the accident. Try to remain calm and wait for help to arrive.

If you can, take pictures of the accident scene, which can be helpful later in a personal injury case. Exchange information with the other party involved, including names, contact details and insurance information. You should also report the accident to the police and your insurance company as soon as possible.

Staying safe on the road requires continual effort and attention and not letting down your guard just because the weather is nice. By following these tips, you can enjoy rides while minimizing the risk of accidents.
