Missed infection results in amputation, medical malpractice claim

The availability of joint replacement is a wonder of modern medicine. Countless lives have been improved in Ohio by the availability of this technology. Surgery is never without risk, and major surgery comes with incrementally more risk. A successful operation brings with it great improvement in the quality of life. But when complications resulting from an operation occur, the outcome can be far less favorable and result in a case of medical malpractice.

About 10 years ago, a gentleman had both knees replaced. The surgery was a success, and he returned to an active life. Five years post-op, one of his knees became damaged. The gentleman found a surgeon to repair the damaged knee. Two months later the patient slipped and reinjured the knee.

The knee was repaired again, and the leg was placed in a cast. The patient complained of pain and discomfort and was concerned about the possibility of infection. The surgeon dismissed these concerns. The patient returned to the hospital with severe pain and swelling in the leg at which time it was determined that there was an infection. The infection required hours of surgery and the outcome was the amputation of the patient's leg.

When a patient in Ohio undergoes surgery he or she understands that the operation carries a certain level of risk. The patient trusts the surgeon to perform to the best of his or her ability and to listen to questions and concerns after the procedure. A person who experiences a negative outcome following an operation, and feels that his or her concerns are not being properly addressed, may benefit from speaking with a personal injury attorney. An attorney experienced in medical malpractice may be able to advise the client as to whether or not there is a viable medical malpractice claim. A successfully litigated claim may provide compensation for medical costs, lost wages and pain and suffering.
