Maintain safe following distance and reduce chance of car crash

Ohio highways are crowded with holiday shoppers and travelers. Most drivers are aware that defensive driving and anticipating problems can prevent accidents. Maintaining a safe following distance is one of the most important things a driver can do. However, during the busy holiday season people can become distracted and lose focus, which can cause a car crash.

Failure to maintain a safe distance between vehicles may have contributed to a multiple car crash on Ohio 32. A five-car pileup caused the death of one person. The crash resulted in the highway being shut down for a short period of time as the accident scene was cleared and investigated. The accident appears to have happened when one driver failed to maintain a safe following distance, hitting the car in front of him and causing a chain-reaction crash.

It is not believed that drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident. Speed has not been ruled out as a possible contributing factor. In addition to the person who died, two children were taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

There is no such thing as a good time for a car crash. However, the holiday season is undoubtedly one of the worst times for a serious accident to occur. The holidays may serve as a reminder of the tragedy for years to come. Nothing can undo what has already taken place, but a civil lawsuit against the party or parties deemed responsible may provide compensation for medical costs, final costs and other verifiable losses.
