First responder injured in car crash

First responders are the first to arrive at accident scenes. They are the men and women who spend their time helping others and sometimes they put their lives on the line during emergency calls. In Ohio, the Springfield Township Fire Department is holding a vigil for one of its own after a devastating car crash

The department had responded to the first accident scene near U.S. 68 and Fairfield Pike. At  about 10 p.m., a second accident occurred and a 72-year-old volunteer first responder was hit. He had been helping crash victims when a car barrelled through an accident scene, pinning him against one of the wrecked cars. The man lost his leg in the crash and is now recovering at Miami Valley Hospital.

Authorities said the driver, who was not hurt in the crash, invoked his right to speak with legal counsel and refused to make a statement. An officer from the Ohio State Highway Patrol said it did not appear that alcohol or drugs impaired the driver. More details will be released once the investigation is complete.

It is important to approach an accident scene with caution at night. The lights from emergency vehicles can cause a driver to become distracted. The effects of a car crash as serious as this will last forever. Mounting medical bills, loss of wages and long-term recovery programs will create financial burdens. In similar circumstances, an Ohio personal injury attorney can offer compassionate support and ongoing assistance in pursuing legal recourse against the party or parties deemed culpable.
