Listeria contamination forces product recall

A popular vegetable supplier has issued a voluntary recall of product tainted with listeria, a harmful bacterium. This recall includes certain packaged produce distributed at food markets across the United States and Canada. Six supermarkets are involved in the product recall, and a major food retailer in Ohio has pulled several dozen products off shelves.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered the contamination through routine sampling, and the supplier has issued the recall as a precautionary measure. No product-related illnesses have been reported. Authorities advise consumers to check the "best if used by" date on the product package and discard or return any with dates Oct. 11 to Oct. 20.

The recall involves many products, including asparagus, cauliflower and broccoli, that sold across fourteen states. The company continues to comply with U.S. and Canadian health officials in the recall of the products. There are increased risks for serious infections in pregnant women who may pass the bacteria to their developing fetuses. The infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Symptoms may include fever and diarrhea similar to other stomach bugs.

A tainted product can cause serious illness, irreversible health issues and sometimes even death. Medical bills, lost time at work and strains on family and relationships are only a few of the hardships that could arise. In Ohio, anyone who has sustained illness or death after ingesting food from a product recall may benefit from consulting a personal injury attorney. A dedicated lawyer can determine if a company is negligent and if monetary relief is entitled.
