Man jumps into Ohio River to flee scene of drunk driving accident

Fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime, and when a drunk driver does so, usually all that is accomplished is adding another crime to the list of charges. People who leave the scene usually do so in the usual ways such as leaving their car fleeing on foot. Rarely do people get as creative as one man who recently jumped into the Ohio River and tried to swim away.

The 29-year-old man was traveling on Interstate 75 when he apparently crashed into the rear of another car. He tried to leave the accident in his car, but crashed again, this time into a traffic barrier. He then jumped into the Ohio River and began trying to swim across.

Police began receiving emergency calls reporting the man swimming in the river fully clothed. One he was pulled out of the water, he commented to police that the river was a lot bigger and moving faster than he expected.

The man was allegedly highly intoxicated, with police speculating that his blood alcohol level was three or four times over the limit. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a contusion and lacerations to his head as well as hypothermia symptoms. He was then ordered to be held for psychological evaluation.

While there is no denying that a story about a man trying to swim across a huge river to get away from the scene of what is believed to be a drunk driving accident is bizarre, there is nothing humorous about drunk driving.

Thousands of people are injured and killed each year when people make the selfish and irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel after drinking. Those who have been injured or lost loved ones because someone was so irresponsible have the right to be financially compensated for their losses. An attorney who handles such personal injury cases may be able to guide you through this process. It is unclear whether anyone was injured in the initial collision and will pursue this course of action.
